Someone The Husband works with is against dogs being on leashes despite the fact that last year in this town a literal guide dog was almost mauled to death by a dog that wasn’t on a leash.
This grown ass woman literally said ‘Well it didn’t happen to MY dog, so why should she be on a lead? And I TRUST my dog!’ like? I’m at a loss. She thinks because her dog is well-trained and non-aggressive that she’s fine not being on a leash in a busy tourist town.
Walking your dog is a bit like driving; sure, you can be a responsible driver. You can be good, and know you’re not likely to cause an accident. But that doesn’t mean every other driver on the road is as responsible or competent, and that they’re not going to crash into you.
She even tried to pull the ‘if you wouldn’t put your child on a leash, why would you do that to your dog?’
I mean, first of all I think in a busy, crowded street it is totally a parent’s right to decide if they want to use toddler reigns or whatever. I don’t personally have any issue with them and think trying to make them comparable to abuse is just ridiculous; in a perfect world there’d be no need for them, but some toddlers are quick and unruly and even the most attentive parents can’t focus 100% on them all the time.
But secondly, even if they were in some way bad….dogs and children are…very different creatures, you know?
Like I don’t remember the last time an unleashed toddler mauled someone else’s child to death in the streets.
Basically put your damn dog on a leash.
And almost immediately following this conversation, her dog almost ran into traffic.
