dammit-stark:

I honestly love the costume department for the first Avengers movie so damn much because everything about their costumes are so very Intentional and I love it. Sure their costumes aren’t really the best looking (see: Cap’s cowl), but the costumes are perfect for being the first movie for a Group, y’know? The costume create these sort of characateurs of the characters that form the perfect introduction of this ragtag group of heroes.

Cap’s costume in and of itself is… kind of a tragedy. It really is NOT the prettiest thing in the world but it’s the perfect sort of first try. It’s bright blue and unrealistic red gloves and the star is big and proud and the whole costume looks like it came right out of a comic book and leaves room for development as his character becomes more than a righteous soldier with a hero complex in the movies that follow. Then there’s Thor. His costume is fine enough, but I’ve always thought it looks a little cheap or cheesy or something along those lines, but that’s kinda what it’s supposed to be. Thor is a god in a world previously closed off to the whole concept of aliens and real life mythology and this is his stepping out into the world so of course his costume is godly and odd and once again looking like a characateur.

And that’s not even getting me started on the subtle things. Bruce is frequently pictured in the movie wearing a purple button-up. It’s subtle and unimportant but it’s perfect because the hulk is frequently known for wearing purple pants and they’re introducing this character with a new actor and so they put him in a purple shirt to make him more easily identifiable as the Hulk. Then there’s Tony. Tony’s différent because his suit is his main fighting gear and of course that goes through all of its technical changes throughout all of the movies he’s in and because he’s in more movies than the others, the costuming is a little more subtle. But I still think it’s important to note that on the Helicarier Tony is pictured wearing a Black Sabbath T-shirt that fits his character perfectly.

There’s not too much to say about Clint and Nat because they’re agents and their costumes aren’t too complex beyond the basic tac gear, but there are still some notable details I think. Nat’s hair, for example, is a slightly more Red color in The Avengers movie than any other. It has its iconic curl and bright color that makes her look like she’s right out of a comic book.

While we’re on the topic of SHIELD agents, I think it’s important to point out the great costume design that went into Hill’s, Fury’s, and all the other general SHIELD agents’ costumes. With Fury, for example, I love how the combination of the eye patch and the long coat create this ominous persona that helps to define the director of this newly introduced spy agency that’s pulling the strings behind the scenes and creating the Avengers. The most simple of details that I still Love is that of all the SHIELD agents, including Maria Hill. They have their own sort of uniform but it’s different from the tac gear that Nat and Clint where, branded with SHIELD logo and once again introducing this new MegaSecret Spy Agency to viewers in the perfect way.

I may have thought about this way too much but yeah I love the Avengers’ costumes a little too much in The Avengers, that’s all
