it’s easier to get into harvard than it is to get approved for cash assistance welfare in the state of mississippi. in 2016, MS approved just 1.4% of the applicants for its TANF program, giving them enough money to only live within 10% of the federal poverty level. MS arguably has the strictest welfare applicant requirements in the nation and will likely become a model for republican welfare reform in 2018. 

work requirements for welfare are literally designed to exclude people from accessing these programs and were directly informed by stereotypes of black people as being lazy and irresponsible. people should be able to receive assistance – food, shelter, cash, child care – without any strings attached.
